For heating, water is heated to about 160 degrees Fahrenheit and is circulated from the power house for reheating. This requires circulating 2,000 gallons of water per minute to each building, or a total of 14,400,000 gallons per day to the five buildings. For cooling, the process is reversed, and heat is removed from the circulating water to chill it to about 45 degrees. Some 258,160 gallons of water per day are evaporated in the cooling of 2,585 apartments.

Steam is generated at a high pressure of 650 pounds, and this is used to operate the turbine to produce electricity. Steam is taken out of the turbine 20 pounds of pressure and used again to heat the buildings in the winter and cool them in the summer. When there is no heating or cooling required, the residual heat in the steam must be dissipated through the cooling towers in the roof of the power house.

Our electricity is produced by two steam turbine generators with a capacity of 6,000 kilowatts per hour. The power house operates one turbine at a time with the other on stand-by. In case of electrical interruption, the plant was built with a diesel generator with a capacity of 500 kilowatts per hour.
